In 1887, Oregonian Richard Knight gave his personal collection of exotic animals to the city of Portland. The museum, which has underdone significant renovations lately and continues to improve, was the home of the first sunken, bar less cage in the world-the home for a pair of bears. The zoo's highlights include the Red Ape Reserve with monkeys swinging overheard, the Africa Rainforest and Savanna, the Amazon Flooded Rainforest, Predators of the Serengeti, and the American Northwest exhibit. There is also a sculpture garden and insect zoo.
